FIRENZE...

But now let’s talk about our beloved Florence! It’s still summer here even though it’s October!

Keeping on the seasonal topic for a moment, there’s exciting news for fall fans as Tuscany inaugurates a new pumpkin patch and fall-inspired theme park! L’Orto delle Zucche is open for one month only in Matassino, a 40-minute drive from Florence. With a striking red barn, a witch’s hut, and an adorable cottage filled with surprises, American-style family fun has come to Tuscany!

Something else cute for kids (and their grown-ups!) can be found on via Cavour as the Dreoni toy store celebrates its 100-year anniversary. There’s an exhibition on vintage toys to get us all reliving our childhoods, while a free admission party on October 7-8 at the Carrozze Gallery gives us a chance to have fun with shows, workshops, and play activities.

There’s nothing better than a fascinating film to relax, unwind, and stimulate your mind. 50 Days of Cinema (www.50giornidicinema.it) is a jam-packed program with nine international film fests covering from October 6 to December 12. With everything from the FánHuā Chinese Film Festival (October 5-8) to the France Odeon (October 28-November 1), there’s a long line-up to choose from. You’ll find it hard to leave your seat!

The museums and galleries have a particularly exciting offering this month, asFlorence Art Week takes place from September 28 to October 8. 32 venues host 44 events involving 29 cultural institutions, with exhibitions like Fortunato Depero at Palazzo Medici Riccardi (until January 28) and Anish Kapoor at Palazzo Strozzi (October 7-February 4) getting art lovers excited. There are equally enthralling art shows at venues like the Uffizi Galleries, Istituto degli Innocenti and MAD Murate Art District meaning no matter which street you take in the city, you’re sure to find an exciting exhibition not far away!

The 14th edition of the Florence Biennale is another big feature of Florence’s cultural calendar, with over 600 exhibiting artists from 5 continents filling the spaces at Fortezza da Basso from October 14-22. Titled I Am You: Individual and Collective Identities in Contemporary Art and Design, there’s an incredible array of works, and Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to American photographer David LaChapelle and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Themes include the sustainability of the modern museum sector, with works by the Maori Collective a particularly interesting addition this year—an event not to miss!

On to some foodie news! It’s truffle time in Tuscany! I can’t wait to get started making taglierini pasta with truffle sauce, an absolute favorite at this time of year. To make this comforting dish that’s rich in seasonal flavors, take your preferred pasta (tagliatelle or spaghetti work well either!) and once cooked, add it to a fresh white truffle sauce, making sure to add a sprinkle of Parmesan and a little bit of black pepper for a truly memorable taste. Buon appetito!

Enjoy this Indian Summer in Europe....have a GREAT OCTOBER!!

Yours,

Jennifer
